The great walled city of Marostica has fascinated us! Seen from the distance, it seems to be an ethereal scene from a mythical drama. The city nestles up against a hill, and the thick double walls of the city climb to the castle on the crest. ..1 1/2 miles in total length.
The walls are huge! Note that Bob is waving from the sidewalk at the foremost section of wall.

Entering through the city gate, you can walk onto the huge chess board, scene of a bi-annual festival. Legend has it that centuries ago two men vied for the hand of the king's daughter. The winner of the chess game claimed the princess's hand; her grateful husband instituted the festival to celebrate his good fortune; and the festival continues today, played with live people dressed in ancient costumes as the chess pieces.
...or climb the steep, cobbled path, as we did with Elders Shakespear, in red, and Dickerson, in orange.

The daring can walk the parapets along the ancient walls. We held our breath and prayed when the elders insisted on venturing to the farthest edge!
Marostica is compelling, even when viewed from the back side of the hill.
The view from Marostica's peak and castle tower is beautiful, classic Italy...the wonder of this land never fails to leave us in awe! We love Italy!!

P.S. You should be receiving a box with a lot of mail pretty soon (Ben had been making quite a stash and it finally got sent after I collected all the random piles that were developing around the house...) It weighed over a pound so the Swinksenbergers had it sent for us ;)
